The Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility fellowship is designed to provide special competence in the diagnosis and management of endocrine and infertility problems and in the design and execution of research in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. As a three year program, the fellowship introduces the trainee to clinical, surgical and research aspects of Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility.
During the first year, the fellow is trained in office, ambulatory and surgical management of reproductive endocrinology and infertility patients. The fellow rotates through the faculty’s separate clinical offices, sees the patients one-on-one with the faculty physician, and participates with the faculty member in the entire diagnostic and therapeutic plan of the patient. This experience with patients and faculty members continues during all aspects of patient care including ambulatory surgery and hospitalizations. During surgical procedures, the fellow and house staff gains hands-on experience as surgeon or as assistant depending on individual capabilities and the complexity of the procedures. All procedures are under faculty guidance. Ambulatory care aspects of the first year allow the fellow to gain comprehensive experiences in office procedures and outpatient including transvaginal ultrasound, ovulation induction, artificial insemination, menopause management, hirsutism, amenorrhea and management of pediatric and adolescent gynecologic patients. Also during the first year, the fellow will be heavily involved in the in vitro fertilization aspects of their training. This includes participation in both the clinical and laboratory components of this program with responsibility for protocol assignment, and an in-depth experience at performance of the technical aspects of in vitro fertilization including egg retrieval and embryo transfer. The fellow is also exposed to the important clinical issues surrounding in vitro fertilization including an understanding and management of complications that may arise from this treatment regimen.
The second year of the fellowship is devoted exclusively to research. The fellow is offered 100% protected time. Thus, in this year, the fellow has absolutely no call responsibilities and no patient contact. Approximately 9 months into the fellow’s first year, the fellow selects a research laboratory and project. This allows the fellow adequate time to give careful thought to the various research interests of faculty within the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and as well as opportunities in other departments within the medical center. This division believes strongly that participation in a serious basic science research program is an important educational experience, an important balance to clinical training, and an important complement to developing special competence in reproductive endocrinology and infertility.
The majority of the third year is devoted to research and the continuation of research efforts. The third year fellow is also given the opportunity to participate in surgical cases of their choice with the understanding that the first year fellow has first pick. The third year fellow is also able to participate in IVF cases as they chose.
Throughout all three years, the fellow participates in a variety of didactic sessions within the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
